DepEd Central Office probes Malvar SHS F2F implementation

The Department of Education Central Office represented by Mr. Gaudencio Luis N. Serrano, Supervising Education Program Specialist under the Bureau of Learning Delivery-Teaching and Learning Division (BLD-TLD), examines the implementation of limited face-to-face classes in Malvar Senior High School, June 3.

Mr. Serrano was accompanied by Mr. Mario Maramot, the CID Chief and Education Supervisor from the Division of Batangas Province.

This field monitoring aimed to verify the processes observed by the institution in the limited face-to-face class implementation to achieve learning continuity and address challenges that occur with it. It involved classroom observations and focus group discussions (FGD) with teachers. It also involved Key Informant Interviews (KII) with the school head, Dr. Jhomar Sor, and Malvar PSDS, Dr. Gina Laksamana.

This activity was part of the department’s 4-day field monitoring of the expanded limited face-to-face classes implementation.

Since classes in Malvar SHS were scheduled from Monday to Thursday, no classroom observation happened. Only KII and FGD were conducted.

The KII with the school head and supervisor focused on the forms of technical assistance they have provided to teachers. It also sought the challenges and highlights of the expanded phase of limited face-to-face classes.

Meanwhile, the FGD centered on how teachers maximize their interaction with learners and utilize strategies and techniques to achieve learning continuity in home-based and classroom-based activities.

Providing Google G Suite student accounts for modular distance learning was highlighted as a primary means for learning delivery services during the pandemic. However, students' reading comprehension topped the school's concerns that hindered their academic performance.

Mr. Serrano emphasized the need for teachers to become storytellers in the classroom and adapt to students' present learning styles affected by gamification and social media to intensify the teaching-learning process.

Select teachers shared the school's initiatives to cope and meet the demands of the "new normal" in education. It included the preparation of self-learning modules, lesson integration, and maximization in using the school website.

Dr. Laksamana also shared the adopt-a-child program for students who are at risk of dropping out.

In the end, Mr. Serrano expressed his awe of the institution and even compared it to a private school. He commended the collective efforts of the school head and the teachers in dealing with the challenges of the "new normal" in teaching and learning. Article by Leidelen Telegrapo
