Malvar Senior High School Conducts Mid-Year In-Service Training, Performance Review for Teachers

In a deliberate effort to enhance the skills of educators, assess the progress of its educational programs, and fortify the foundation for sustained improvement, Malvar Senior High School held a Mid-Year In-Service Training program from January 24-26 and January 29-30, 2024.

This comprehensive activity includes mid-year performance review and evaluation of Individual performance Commitment Review (IPCRF), Progress Monitoring of SIP and PPAs, and the implementation of Catch-Up Fridays, DepEd’s Reading Enhancement and Intervention program. SIP/PPA Review Guided by its main objective of instilling the knowledge and skills to and among the teachers to effectively implement and integrate the mid-year performance review, progress monitoring, and the "Catch-Up Fridays" initiative into their teaching practices, the INSET kicked off with an opening program spearheaded by Mr. Marvin M. Saludo, Master Teacher II and School L&D Coordinator on January 24, 2024.

Dr. Catherine V. Gonzales, Principal II stated her opening remarks and facilitated the orientation, updates, and reminders for the School Improvement Plan (SIP), Annual Improvement Plan (AIP) and Annual Procurement Plan (PPA). She discussed among the teachers the school plan and programs. She also showed the possible improvement that the program coordinators can make in their plans and other documents.

Every coordinator and teachers were then equipped with the knowledge on the SIP, AIP and PPAs so they focused on the preparation of the documents for SIP/PPA’s review and monitoring. They did these on the remaining hours of the morning session.

The afternoon session was devoted to the review and monitoring of SIP/PPAs of the program coordinators. It was facilitated by the principal and the master teachers. The review includes dynamic process of questioning, observing, and evaluating the progress of the different programs to determine progress and identify areas for improvement. They also assessed the impact of efforts on educational outcomes to ensure responsiveness to evolving needs of the school in general. All these were done as they all fostered a feedback loop for continuous improvement.

The rest of the teachers devoted their afternoon sessions to the preparation of the MOV’s for mid-year IPCR review. They reviewed the indicators stipulated in the RPMS and collated the necessary documents as to determine their progress.

Mid-Year Performance Review and Evaluation of Individual Performance Commitment Review

The second day of INSET focused solely on the Mid-Year Performance Review and Evaluation of Individual Performance Commitment Review (IPCR) of the teachers. The faculty was divided into their subject group, led by the master teachers: Mrs. Imelda G. Silva for STEM, Mrs. Marianne E. Caraig for Language and Social Sciences, Mr. Marvin M. Saludo for TVL, and Mr. Jerrold D. Ramos for ABM.

The review focused on comprehensive assessment of the school's progress in implementing educational programs, projects, and activities, strengthening teachers' skills through a detailed review of evaluation criteria and competencies taught, and the alignment of individual performance plans with school objectives.

Each teacher came up with the comprehensive IPCRF reports indicating performance progress and the alignment of each teacher’s individual performance plans with the school’s objectives.

Fridays Reimagined: A Catch-Up Journey in Holistic Learning Strategies, Vision Sharing and Implementation Planning

This portion of the Mid-Year INSET focused on the orientation and implementation of the Catch-Up Fridays, an innovation of the Department of Education highlighting the need to improve reading skills as well as imbed peace, values, and health education in the readings of the students.

As this progressive initiative must be implemented in all schools, Malvar Senior High School envisioned the need to empower teachers with the necessary strategies and insights to make Catch-Up Fridays successful. Hence, Ms. Jenny Vieve M. Oamil, the school’s REAP Coordinator and Catch-Up Coordinator facilitated a training workshop among the teachers from January 26, 2024.

The Training Workshop on Catch-Up Fridays

The seminar focused on the orientation of the Catch-Up Fridays, equipping teachers with practical strategies and instructional approaches to incorporate values and health education seamlessly into each reading session.

Included in the orientation are the sample learning materials and plans that the teachers can make during Catch-Up Fridays. Ms. Oamil also discussed the sample themes that they can use as integration of peace, values, and health education in reading. She initiated the activities where the teacher-participants share how they could integrate lessons to the students’ readings.

Since this is a newly launched program of the DepEd, there were numerous concerns and clarifications raised as the seminar progressed. Concerns include the hours of teaching that must be set aside for the Catch-up Fridays and the possible problems in the accomplishment of the learning competencies of other subjects. This concern was addressed by Ms. Oamil as she quoted one of the trainers in the Division orientation that teachers must set aside their subject to cater Catch-Up Fridays. The faculty also agreed to make amendments in the scheduling for the second semester to accommodate Catch-Up Fridays.

Teachers were also concerned of the learning materials to be utilized during the reading sessions. As one of the outputs of the seminar, the lessons to be crafted during the workshop will be utilized by the school on the first month (four sessions) of implementation of the Catch-up Fridays.

After the workshop and open forum, the seminar went on with the focus group discussion on lesson planning, materials development, and integration of peace, values, health, and HGP in the lessons. The teachers were divided into four subject groups led by the assigned master teachers.

Lesson Plan Development and Resource Materials Development

The second day of the seminar was devoted to the crafting and development of the lesson plan for the Catch-Up Fridays. Each subject group must be able to produce a quality lesson plan for the Catch-Up Friday, as an output of their focus group discussion.

Aside from the lesson plan, each subject group must be able to develop resource materials for Catch-Up Fridays. These resource materials must adhere to the guidelines set for Catch-Up Fridays.

Each group must also choose one teacher to facilitate a demo-teaching of their lesson plan and resource materials.

The afternoon session was allotted for the teachers to prepare for the teaching demonstration to be done on the following day.

Teaching Demonstration

The assigned teacher per subject group demonstrated their lesson plan and resource materials with the teachers who acted as the students.

The teaching demonstration was done by Ms. Grace Joy L. Fernandez and Mrs. Ritchie L. Pagcaliwangan for the National Reading Program, and Mrs. Raquel M. Cruz and Mrs. Ma. Diana D. Sales for the Peace, Values, and Health Education.

Teaching demonstration for the National Reading Program showcased the sample literary text as well as the teaching strategies for reading enhancement.

Teaching demonstration for the Peace, Values, and Health Education exhibited integration of lessons under peace, values, health and HGP to the reading sessions of the students.

This workshop not only informed the teachers of the reading innovation but also inspired them to play a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape addressing the reading and learning gaps of the students as they developed plans outlining strategies for bridging learning gaps, incorporating reading programs, and vision-sharing within individual classrooms.
