Mr. and Ms. SHS 2023: A Display of Beauty, Wit, Talent, and Generosity

by: Trisha Joyce Araneta It was indeed a night to remember—a glamorous and spectacular setup that became more fabulous with the presence of dazzling candidates who confidently showcased their beauty and wit during the coronation pageant of Mr. and Ms. Senior High School 2023 held Saturday at the Malvar Cultural Center.

Fifty-three candidates vied for the titles: 24 male and 29 female candidates. They flaunted their elegance and poise as they paraded in their school uniform, casual wear, and evening gown/ formal wear.

The cheering crowd was ecstatic as they showed their support for their favorite candidates. They even had “tarpapels” and tarpaulins printed with the candidate’s face. The shouts and shrieks were more than enough to enliven the moment every time the candidates would come up the stage.

The program was smooth-flowing. It started right on time. The audience surely never experienced boredom during the show because in between, there were performances that entertained them. From singing to dancing to interpretative dance—you name it all, the program got it all. Truly, the students’ talents amazed the audience!

But what would a program be without its lively hosts? Ever since Mr. and Ms. Senior High School started, Mr. Perry Taborda (who was also the program organizer) and Ms. Jenny Vieve Oamil were the masters of ceremonies because of their exceptional hosting skills and ability to connect with their audience. This year, they were joined by Althea Nicole Dela Cruz and Anne Lorraine Garing as segment hosts who both proved their prowess and did not waver in keeping up with the program hosts.

During that night, those who had the most difficult task were the judges because they would not just watch. Instead, they would rate each candidate based on a set of criteria. The panel of judges that decided who the most deserving candidates were to receive the coveted titles composed of Mr. Derick Bubihis, Teacher I at Tambo Integrated School; Ms. Lea Cabar, Teacher and Beauty Consultant of Mary Kay Philippines; Marky Villaflores, Fashion Designer from Malvar, Batangas; Mr. Mak Makalintal, Teacher Broadcaster and Teacher III from Lipa City National High School; Ms. Norryrisa Calingasan; Gandang Mommy 2016 of San Jose, Batangas; and Mr. Olin John Karlo Uy, Mr. BatStateU TNEU 2023.

While the show progressed, the excitement heightened, especially when the candidates were trimmed down to seven. The question-and-answer portion was nerve-wracking both for the candidates and their supporters. But the moment even became breathtaking during the announcement of the winners.

The show ended with two names that made another history in the making. After two years of hiatus in mass gatherings, Malvar SHS has chosen its new ambassadors of beauty and wit: Ian Gabriel Carandang of ICT 122 bagged Mr. Senior High School while Rheinz Ryza Robis of ABM 113 was crowned as this year’s Ms. Senior High School.

The success of the event was a product of the collaborative efforts of the organizer, faculty and staff of Malvar SHS, production team, candidates, performers, other people who worked behind the scene, and the sponsors. Generosity overflowed as the sponsors extended their resources to the pageant organizer and the institution. These sponsors included the following: Sunjin Philippine Corporations, Wrap and Carry, Magpantay Firing Range and Shootes Club Inc., Rheden’s Digital Photography, Rotary Club of Metro Malvar, Mikabelles Kitchenette, Boston Waters, Jojo Salanga Catering, Parametric Sounds and Lights Rentals, Hon. Moy Marasigan, Hon. Servillano Perilla, Hon. Delia Tagle, Dr. Wenie Gonzales, and Kass Photography.

And since many people have extended a helping hand, Malvar SHS with the School Parent-Teacher Association and its Supreme Student Government would like to give back to its stakeholders as they aimed to use the pageant’s solicited funds for their beautification project initiatives.

The pageant and everything about it—program, hosts, judges, candidates, crowd, the people behind it, and the purpose for which it was created—everything was incredible!
